The Brain’s have a well set sonic identity and this is another addition to their discography. I am interested to see where they go next. The sixth album by The Brains, the Montreal Psychobilly band, continues the band’s sound of blending pummeling rhythm and melodic vocals to create a new album, The Monster Within. It is no doubt that these guys have talent. It really showcases what this band can do with their instruments. There is one instrumental track,”Cucaracha in Leather” that is just amazing. And judging by these lyrics these guys like to party on the weekend or any night for that matter. Lyrics are a very important part of any band, they can tell you a lot about the band and their interests. Ten years ago I would have been all over this album but not where I’m at in my life right now. This is a band that sings of drinking, sexual things and things of the dark side. ![]() Today in music that is a rare thing, bands tend to stick to one thing, not these guys. This album is all over the spectrum of music. One moment you can be in a smoky bar with a juke box in the corner and the next in the 30s or 40s swing dancing. If you want to escape this world for about twenty minutes this album does that. The imagery that The Brains conjure with this album is amazing. Then the drums kick in and off you go to a different world. It starts with a blazing guitar riff that pulls you in right away. The title track, “The Monster Within” does a good job of setting the pace for the album. It may take a few listens to enjoy, if you are not a fan of this genre or band. In my lifetime I haven’t listened to this genre much, besides The Misfits from time to time but that was only because all “punks” should listen to The Misfits, right? So after my first listen of this album I wasn’t too sure about it but upon my second, third, fourth and fifth listen it started to grow on me. With 14 tracks under three minutes a pop, the band adheres to a hit-and-run approach that serves them well with such tunes as album opener “The Monster Within”, the twang-tastic “Misery”, and the surfing-in-hell instrumental “Cucaracha in Leather”. Protection Each record is protected within its record sleeve by a white vellum anti-dust sleeve. Melding together a hyperkinetic rhythm section with jangling guitar lines and song titles like “Bleed”, “Kill Kill”, “Rest in Pieces” and “Suffering and Pain”, the trio spew forth the sonic equivalent of a Quentin Tarantino movie - an over-the-top exercise in garish excess that manages to be intermittently entertaining.
